Letter: 4-H support

To the editor:

Thank you for your column celebrating the career of Gordon Hibbard (April 12) highlighting not only the importance of the Kansas 4-H Foundation but also 4-H in our state.

As a product of 4-H and parent of current 4-H members, I am happy to see recognition of a vital program in our community. The Kansas 4-H Foundation is an asset to thousands of children, young adults and adults in every city and county. Our community is doubly blessed not only to receive support of the Kansas 4-H Foundation, but to also have the Douglas County 4-H Foundation, which has supported local 4-H programs for over 30 years through the generosity of hundreds of supporters.

The Douglas County 4-H Foundation provides support for trips (Citizenship Washington Focus), education programs (Slice of Ag), local camp attendees (Rock Springs 4-H Camp), and other areas to help defray costs for these important activities. The Foundation also supports the Dreher 4-H Building, a special asset generously given to our community by Helen Dreher for use by 4-H programs. Additionally, we annually award over $15,000 college scholarships established by memorial and honorary donations for the benefit of young adults in our county.

4-H is an organization for anyone, urban or rural, who wants to learn how to “make the best better.” More information can be found at www.douglas.ksu.edu. Anyone wanting to help the Douglas County 4-H Foundation support these important efforts can contact us at dgco4hfoundation@gmail.com.
