Tonganoxie man to be sentenced for 2013 Lawrence Bank robbery

Randy Ashworth

A 43-year-old Tonganoxie man will be sentenced next month for his role in a 2013 Lawrence bank robbery.

Randy Ashworth pleaded no contest to felony robbery Thursday in Douglas County District Court for the Feb. 13, 2013, robbery of Lawrence Bank, 100 E. Ninth St. He was scheduled for a preliminary hearing but waived the hearing after reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Ashworth faces up to 128 months in prison, and, as part of the plea agreement, both sides will seek the 128-month sentence. Restitution has not yet been determined.

According to Assistant District Attorney James McCabria, who is leading the prosecution, Ashworth approached a Lawrence Bank teller with a note that demanded $2,000 in cash. McCabria said that Ashworth told the teller not to trigger an alarm or the teller would be killed. Ashworth left with about $4,000 in cash. He was later booked into a western Missouri jail on unrelated charges in June. When contacted by Lawrence police, Ashworth admitted to his role in the Lawrence Bank robbery.

Ashworth has two recent felony theft charges in Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties, both also from 2013. The Leavenworth County case will be dismissed, and McCabria said Thursday that Ashworth’s Wyandotte County charge may run concurrently with the Douglas County charge. He will be sentenced May 13 and will serve that sentence upon the completion of an ongoing Missouri sentence for attempted robbery, forgery and interfering with law enforcement.

Ashworth has many previous Kansas convictions between 1993 and 2010 in Douglas, Wyandotte, Leavenworth, Johnson and Harvey counties — most of which involved either theft or forgery.
