Overland Park ? Football players and coaches from Lawrence High and Shawnee Mission West were cleared from the field about an hour before kickoff Thursday night at Shawnee Mission South District Stadium, and school officials never let them back on the turf due to lightning in the area.

The severe weather forced the game to be called off, and rescheduled.

Initially, officials announced the game would be moved to LHS on Friday, because the Vikings’ home field already had a Friday night game on the schedule. But Lions coach Dirk Wedd said when his team got back home Thursday night, the coaches learned SMW had decided to play the game at SMS District Stadium at 3 p.m. Friday.

So the Lions won’t get an unexpected home game, after all.
