Letter: Better spending

September 7, 2013

To the editor:

President Obama and Congress should bring that money home to wage war against members of Congress and think tanks who have waged war against the working class blue- and white-collar workers of this fine country — the people who made the U.S. wealthy.

Stop the insane spending on this war. It is taking the U.S. nowhere and leaving a lot of blood behind accompanied with dead and disabled American and Muslim bodies alike. Reckless and wasteful indeed.

Instead spend this money:

• Creating new industry that cannot be outsourced by private corporate interests thus securing millions of jobs for the U.S. economic growth.

• Repair old sidewalks throughout this nation and build bike/hike paths in the name of safety throughout the nation.

• Take over the funding of public education to protect public schools from privatization.

• Take back the college loan program to protect students from corrupt financial institutions.

• Save our national parks from private corporate interests.

• Increase the minimum wage to $17.50 per hour which equals only $33,000 a year.

Let Americans have public financing of campaigns. Citizens cannot afford special-interest money campaigns for it is the citizens that get left out. Let citizens vote on this issue.

Yep. For the last 30 years or so we have been engaged in military escalation, wars, and participation in this new global economy. The only good economic cycles we've had have been mostly artificial ones based on paper like the .com and the housing bubble.

As jobs can now be outsourced, it is hard for workers to find steady long-term employment. And as a result of this, we are really losing a lot of things that made this country great. We are kind of losing sight of long-term goals. We could really be doing a lot of things to make us so much better. Instead of eating healthy, we are eating junk food (as an analogy).

Totally agree!! Why do we have to always be the world's police department? Keep our money at home. Invest it in our future. Close the borders as well.

I think that we should quit spending billions and billions of dollars policing the world and upgrade our education system and our deteriorating bridges and roads.

do not go to war against Syria. Joe Biden warned people not to vote for Romney because he would get us into war with Syria. funny that.

---apparently Richard Heckler recommending going to war in this preferred way is opposed to freedom of speech.

Judge Hamm said we shouldn't get in the business of selecting which political seech was preferred.

$17.50 minimum wage? crazy. government artificially inflating wages without an increase in productivity would actually harm our economy and vastly increase unemployment.

we already are creating far more part time jobs than full time (bureau of labor statistics) thanks to obama's regulations and obamacare.

since our government is already borrowing 42-cents of every dollar it spends, it is just silly to argue that money spent hurling useless messages at Syria should be redirected to further spending. no, don't "send a message to Syria," but cut government spending overall.

don't use military force to "send messages." military force should only be used to achieve strategic goals, kill people and break things.

"sending a message" with the military is how the democrats in and around the Whitehouse in the 60's screwed up vietnam.
