To the editor:

This is in response to Judy Dutton’s Oct. 11 letter. What is causing cancers? I too have asked that question many times.

It seems the country can find trillions in order to occupy other countries and fund over 1,000 military bases around the world. The U.S. big spenders can seem to cough up billions annually for questionable political campaigns. And tax dollars fund tons of new road projects we most likely don’t need.

With so much money on the planet why don’t we know what is causing a variety of cancers? The money does seem to not be in short supply. The money needs new direction.

We’re sure smoking tobacco is one source. We’re sure exposure to radioactive materials can. What about the many, many toxic chemicals in our lives, such as inundating yards with toxic chemicals some of which drift through the air during application? Carcinogens are everywhere it seems.

Perhaps we should take it upon ourselves to reduce the number of possibilities while at the same time directing the nation’s spending into areas of greater need.
