FSHS runners first at Newton

? Free State High’s Bailey Sullivan, Emily Venters and Claire Sanner went 1-2-3 in the girls individual standings, and the Firebirds won both team titles at the Newton Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at Centennial Park.

Sullivan won the girls 4K race in 14:53.15 and was followed closely by Venters (14:53.88) and Sanner (14.54.75). Free State’s Kiran Cordes placed seventh in 15:51.72, Rosemary Newsome 13th in 16:11.06, Molly McCord 14th in 16:13.09, and Allyson Hertig 26th in 16:45.03.

The FSHS girls easily won the team title with 24 points. Runner-up Valley Center had 78 points.

On the boys side, FSHS won the title with 53 points. Washburn Rural was second with 77.

Ryan Liston paced the Firebirds with his third-place time of 16:48.28 in the 5K race. Ethan Donley was sixth in 17:05.66, Thomas Becker 13th in 17:12.78, Tanner Hockenbury 14th in 17:13.21, Connor Ballenger 17th in 17:21.56, Colton Stallard 24th in 17:30.75 and Curtis Zicker 27th in 17:32.18.
