• The KERN Marketing Group of Lawrence announces the addition art director Rory Harms and graphic designer Charles Lewer to its creative team.

Harms previously was an art director at JNA Advertising in Overland Park where he was responsible for local, regional and national advertising campaigns. He also worked as a designer at Visual Fusion, Pioneer Balloon and Wichita Sample Library. He is a graduate of Wichita State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design.

Before coming to KERN Group, Lewer was a designer with Grandstand Sports and Glassware and a volunteer designer for Just Foods. He received an Associate of Applied Science degree in graphic design from Johnson County Community College and is skilled in photography, illustration and digital design.

• Beverly “Toni” Newman, a licensed practical nurse, has joined the staff of OrthoKansas, 1112 W. Sixth St., Suite 124. Newman has more than 20 years of experience in the health care industry including workers’ compensation and training programs, case studies and on-site workplace drug screenings. She received her EMT certification in 1990 from Mercy Regional Training Center and her LPN certificate from Des Moines Area Community College in 1993. She has been working in the medical field in Lawrence since 1995.

• Kurt von Achen, Eudora, received the Liberty Bell Award for community service from the Douglas County Bar Association during the group’s annual Law Day celebration on May 1 at Pachamama’s.

The Liberty Bell Award recognizes individuals or entities that have promoted better understanding of the rule of law, encouraged respect for law and the courts and stimulated a sense of civic responsibility while contributing to good government in the community. Recipients of the award are nominated by members of the Douglas County Bar and selected by the group’s current officers.

Von Achen is an architect who has been chairman of the Eudora Planning Commission since 1974 and served on the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission from 1977 to 1983. He has been a member of the board for Douglas County Development Inc. for more than 25 years, serving as its president for six years. He also is a member of the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Association board and served on the executive committee for the 1995 Douglas County Health and Human Services Needs Assessment.

• Diane Bailey has joined Go Driving School to provide both classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction. She successfully completed a four-month training program and is licensed by the state of Kansas as a driver education instructor.

Diane worked as an entertainment reporter and a freelance writer in Los Angeles before moving to Lawrence nearly 15 years ago. She now specializes in non-fiction books for kids and teens and recently wrote a murder mystery novel for adults.

Go Driving School, which has offered instruction in the Lawrence and Kansas City areas since 2010, provides a comprehensive driver education and refresher driver training to teen and adult students. Its Lawrence office is located at 932 Massachusetts St., Suite 308.

• The World Company, parent company of the Journal-World, has been awarded the Gold Level “Breastfeeding Employee Support Award” by the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition and its Business Case for Breastfeeding program.

The award, the top ranking of three sponsored by the coalition, recognizes businesses that provide support services to their nursing employees, to include education as well as the time and space for employees to nurse and/or pump breast milk at their workplace.

• Coy Leming, Lawrence, is a new junior member of the American Angus Association. Junior members are eligible to register cattle in the American Angus Association, participate in programs conducted by the National Junior Angus Association and take part in association-sponsored shows and other national and regional events.

The American Angus Association, which has its headquarters in St. Joseph, Mo., is the largest beef breed association in the world, with more than 25,000 active adult and junior members.
