Lawrence man arrested on suspicion of DUI, striking pedestrian
A 24-year-old Lawrence man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery and drunken-driving early Friday morning after allegedly striking a pedestrian with his car, according to police.
William Andrew Weideman was arrested after police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a car about 12:30 a.m. Friday in the 500 block of Alabama Street, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman.
When police arrived, the vehicle had left the scene but was stopped by other officers in the 1800 block of Barker Avenue. Witnesses told police that the pedestrian and driver had been in an argument before the driver got in the car, backed up, and drove forward into the pedestrian deliberately, McKinley said. The pedestrian declined medical treatment at the scene.
Weideman, the driver, was booked into Douglas County Jail on suspicion of aggravated battery and DUI. He remained in custody Friday afternoon, with bond not yet set.
