To the editor:
Although I am thoroughly disgusted with the new state budget cobbled together in the middle of the night by the Kansas Legislature, I do want to commend another area of the state government for being responsive and helpful to this citizen.
When we moved to Lawrence several years ago, I found it puzzling that there was no highway sign on U.S. Highway 40 (Sixth Street) at Rockledge Road indicating that one should turn north there to get to Exit 202 on Interstate 70. It is a very easy corner for a stranger to miss. Since we were planning a family reunion with out-of-town company, I wrote to my state representative, Tom Sloan, asking for assistance in obtaining a directional sign at that location. He was very helpful and promised to work with the Kansas Department of Transportation to fix this oversight.
And now, two years later, I want to publicly thank Sloan for his help in obtaining the new directional sign to I-70 at the corner of Rockledge Road and West Sixth Street, which can be seen by those going east. I also want to thank the Kansas Department of Transportation for its work. It is good to know that some departments of state government will still listen to individual Kansans instead of just to wealthy people in Wichita.
