So, this is the way your elected representatives and senators cast their votes in Washington during the week ending July 12: Three of the four representatives (including our Lynn Jenkins) voted “yes” to strip the farm bill of all nutrition programs, including food stamps, that had been part of farm support policy for 40 years.

They also cast four votes to defeat a bid to require annual inspections in those countries that export meat, poultry and egg products to the U.S.

Our representatives cast four “yes” votes for a 2014 energy budget bill (HR 2609) that cuts spending for renewable energy and increases funds for modernizing the U.S. nuclear arsenal. They then voted for an amendment to HR 2609 that would eliminate subsidies for ALL energy industries. The amendment, however, was defeated by a vote of 300 “nos” to 115 “yes” votes.

Another amendment to HR 2609 attempted to transfer the $100 million for nuclear weapons over to the Army Corps of Engineers public works. It was defeated with the help of votes by the Kansas four. Weapons win over public works!

In the Senate, our two helped prevent the advance of a bill designed to reinstate the 3.4 percent interest rate on student loans that Congress had allowed to double on July 1. College students, did you notice?

The positions of one senator and all four representatives will be on the ballot in 2014. I hope that all voters are paying attention.
