Lawrence man charged with rape, aggravated indecent liberities involving teenage girl

A 33-year-old Lawrence man has been charged with rape and aggravated indecent liberties involving a teenage girl.

Bond was set at $150,000 in Douglas County Court Thursday, where the man appeared via video from jail. He has been in custody since he was arrested Tuesday.

Prosecutors said they asked for the high bond amount partly because the man is a flight risk. He is in the United States without legal documents and faces a possible prison sentence of more than 54 years if convicted of rape. The charge of aggravated indecent liberties carries a possible prison sentence of more than 20 years. The man next appears in court Feb. 7.

Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman, said police have not released more details about the case because the arrest of this man is part of an ongoing investigation of other offenses.
