Former Kansas University football player Elvis Patterson was arrested in Douglas County in the 1600 block of East 23rd Street early Sunday morning on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Patterson, 52, of Lenexa, was booked into Douglas County Jail on charges of driving with a suspended license, driving while intoxicated, and refusing a breath test. He was released on $1,500 bond.

In 2011, Patterson was arrested on similar charges but prosecutors dismissed a DUI charge in June 2012. He pleaded guilty to two traffic infractions, refusing a preliminary breath test and speeding for going 12 mph over the limit on Kansas Highway 10.

Patterson, who currently resides in Lenexa, played for KU as a defensive back and defensive end from 1981 to 1983. He went on to play in the NFL and was on two Super Bowl champion teams, Super Bowl XXI with the New York Giants and Super Bowl XXVIII with the Dallas Cowboys.
