Douglas County commissioners cleared the way Wednesday night for the next phase of operators at a rock quarry that straddles the Douglas-Shawnee county line.
Mid-States Materials, which operates the Big Springs Quarry, plans to open a new area for mining. The new area is just south of Route 442, or Stull Road, in Douglas County, which is also 45th Street in Shawnee County.
However, the conditional use permit originally issued in 1990 requires that Mid-States obtain county approval of a reclamation plan for each new phase of the quarry operation before opening that new phase.
Eric Bettis, manager of the quarry, said the company's reclamation activity follows closely behind the mining activity so that property is continually being mined, and then immediately reclaimed.
Commissioners voted 3-0 Wednesday to approve the company's reclamation plan for the new area. Bettis said Shawnee County commissioners have already given similar approval for operations on that side of the county line.
