KHP arrests second suspect in Feb. 4 manhunt

A 22-year-old Olathe man arrested last week is suspected of being involved in a Feb. 4 high-speed chase and a manhunt near Kansas Highway 10 east of Eudora, the Kansas Highway Patrol said Wednesday.

Justin Joe Berry was arrested Feb. 5 by highway patrol troopers and booked into Douglas County Jail on suspicion of drug and drug paraphernalia possession, theft, criminal possession of a firearm by a felon, and eluding police.

Berry was the second suspect sought in connection with a stolen silver Chevrolet that eluded troopers on K-10 and was abandoned near East 2400 Road on Feb. 4, Donald Hughes, a highway patrol spokesman, said Wednesday. After searching for several hours, officers arrested Brandon Michael Helm, 19, Lecompton.

Charges have not yet been filed against Berry or Helm, and troopers did not say until Wednesday that they believed Berry was one of the two men involved in the Feb. 4 incident. The patrol said law enforcement agencies were investigating the two men in connection with vehicle thefts in surrounding counties. Helm remained in jail Wednesday on other charges, and Berry has been released on a $10,000 bond.
