Letter: Reasonable fees

To the editor:

I’m writing in response to Tammy Yergey’s letter regarding the Lawrence Humane Society’s new higher adoption fees for VIP adoptions, aka purebreds. Ms. Yergey was able to find the Humane Society website but did not quote the full description of what it means for an animal to qualify as a VIP, which is defined as those that have a “unique opportunity to raise funds to offset veterinary expenses for injured or ill animals or help us provide care for older animals who are likely to wait longer for a new home.”

My family adopted a purebred golden retriever puppy from the Lawrence Humane Society and couldn’t believe the low cost. The $150 fee would not have changed our decision to adopt Jackson, especially for an organization dedicated to helping all animals who come through their doors. I think the new adoption fees are a great way to help maximize the amount of care the Humane Society can provide.
