Mardi Gras march down Massachusetts Street planned for next week; everyone invited to participate

Two New Orleans transplants will lead an annual lunchtime Mardi Gras parade in downtown Lawrence next week.

The Krewe de Kaw and Brass Mob Brass Band — a loose group of musicians and others looking to get into the Mardi Gras spirit — will march down the sidewalks of Massachusetts Street on Tuesday, playing music and singing.

The group will meet at noon in front of Aimee’s Café and Coffeehouse, 1025 Massachusetts St. It will march north, ducking in and out of businesses along the way, until it reaches Free State Brewing Co. at 636 Massachusetts St. There, New Orleans-style po’ boy sandwiches and hurricane drinks will be served.

Lawrence couple Mike West and Katie Euliss, who moved to town from New Orleans after their home was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina in 2005, started the tradition in 2007.

Anyone is invited, West said — not to stand and watch, but to dress up in Mardi Gras garb and join in the marching and the noise.
