I feel like we’ve been dissed or at least overlooked. I volunteer once a week at the Lawrence Visitor Center. I’m not alone. There are a number of fine people who give of their time to be on hand to help travelers and visitors wanting information about Lawrence and Kansas. Our on-site managers, Debbie and Keith, are also there to help. The Lawrence Visitor Center is located in the former Union Pacific Depot in North Lawrence. It’s a landmark that’s hard to miss as one crosses the bridge into North Lawrence. We also have a lot of free parking space, which is sometimes hard to come by downtown.

In the Jan. 22 “Town Talk,” Downtown Lawrence Inc. Director Cathy Hamilton said she would love to see a dedicated downtown Lawrence visitors center, where one could find “maps, brochures and friendly people to help point visitors in the right direction.” Well, we already have that right here in river city, only it’s over on the other bank, though not all that far from lovely downtown Lawrence. Come on in. We have free maps, brochures, items about the new historical district, Freedom’s Frontier, information about Kansas University and much, much more. And we always try to be helpful and friendly.
