40 years ago: Kansas AG Vern Miller pops out of car trunk, makes more drug arrests

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 28, 1973:

  • Four men arrested in a recent drug raid led by Kansas Atty. Gen. Vern Miller were to be arraigned this week in Douglas County District Court. Miller had personally taken part in the raid, hiding in the trunk of a car and popping out at the right time as he had done on at least one other occasion. The four men, two from Lawrence and one each from Leawood and Overland Park, had been charged with aiding and abetting the illegal sale of marijuana; one of the Lawrence men was also charged with possession of amphetamines and possession of marijuana. All four were free on $5,000 bond.
  • A “slick and slushy” two-inch snowfall had pelted Lawrence on the previous night and early this morning, causing early traffic problems, but sunny skies had brought rising temperatures to the area. Combined with the increased warmth, the work of active road crews had restored local roads to safe usability by early afternoon.
