Police investigating role of meth in Lawrence chemical accident

Police are investigating material that they believe contains methamphetamine, or other drugs, found at a south Lawrence home where the fire department was called to inspect dangerous chemicals early this morning.

Officers with the Douglas County drug enforcement unit served a search warrant on the home about 8 a.m. A man suffering from burns contacted police at a gas station in the 3000 block of Iowa Street about 1 a.m., said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman.

The man was making “unusual statements,” McKinley said, and police believed the injuries were sustained at the man’s home in the 2500 block of Crestline Court. Officers visiting the home saw fuel and other dangerous chemicals inside and called for a Douglas County Fire Medical unit as a precaution.

The incident was first reported by Journal-World news partner Operation 100.

The man was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, McKinley said.
