Letter: Jayhawk woes
To the editor:
Kansas University’s last game should never have gone to overtime. Leading by 14 with less than seven minutes to play, they didn’t need a lot more points. They did need better ball-handling and decision-making, etc., and defense.
I’m still trying to figure out why they didn’t have KU’s best defender on their hotshot point guard after he made three or four shots early in the second half after making zero in the first half. Releford has been known as our stopper the last two years, and I concur. (He also had a 6-inch height advantage, and he has been a capable scorer as well.) I think he might have clamped down on Burke a few times, and just one stop would have deemed overtime unnecessary. Ditto for one more made free throw.
Getting the ball across the midcourt in time also helps. McGary (25 points, 14 rebounds and three steals) seemed too much for KU to cope with also. Michigan also had their share of problems, but it was theirs to worry about, not KU’s.
Sometimes we tend to forget that other teams like to win, too.
