Man found competent to stand trial for attempted murder

Douglas County District Judge Paula Martin ruled Wednesday that a 39-year-old Lawrence man is competent to stand trial on attempted murder and attempted rape charges stemming from the November stabbing of the man’s wife.

Timothy L. Foster is charged with stabbing his wife and trying to remove her clothes Nov. 29 during an argument at their Lawrence home.

The wife was taken to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka in serious condition after suffering the stab wounds, according to Lawrence police.

In May, Martin ordered a competency evaluation to help determine whether Foster was competent to stand trial. Martin reviewed that evaluation, performed at Larned State Hospital, before ruling Wednesday that Foster is competent for trial.

Foster’s next court hearing is Oct. 25, and he is currently being held on a $500,000 bond at Douglas County Jail.
