Free State volleyball wins Seaman title

? The Free State High volleyball team lost just one game Saturday on its way to winning the Topeka Seaman Invitational.

The Firebirds, led by senior all-tournament team selections Katy Davis and Shelby Holmes, defeated Manhattan, 25-22, 25-19 in the semifinals and Topeka Hayden, 25-18, 25-19, in the championship.

“We played very, very consistently,” FSHS coach Nancy Hopkins said. “Whenever we got down, we fought back. We never got down too far, but we played very, very tough today. I think we’re turning the corner.”

Free State (16-5) went 3-1 in pool play, defeating Holton, 25-17, 25-11, losing to Junction City, 25-23, 25-17, defeating Seaman 25-13, 25-18, and defeating K.C. Sumner, 25-9, 25-13.

On Thursday, the Firebirds will travel to the Olathe East triangular, where they will face the hosts and Lawrence High.
