Protect the planet

To the editor:

As I watched parts of the Republican Convention, I was sick to the stomach when I heard Mitt Romney ridicule and scorn President Obama for “wanting to heal the planet.” Our environment is our most precious resource. If you are a religious person or claim to know God, then you know we are bound to God by nature and bound to God by grace.

At this time we should receive no grace from God for what we are doing to our planet. We mindlessly cut rainforests, we drill and frack for oil, we scalp the beautiful Appalachian Mountains for coal. Our resources are here for us now, but what about our future? In my opinion we have only one clear choice for our planet.

We must let President Obama do the things he set out to do. Our economey needs our help. G.W. left him the biggest mess of the century. As President Clinton stated at the Democratic Convention, this mess is far too big for just four years. And we may not pull out of it for another 10 years, but we have to cooperate, that means YOU, Republicans, and do what President Obama has set out to do. By continuing the tea party attitude, we have set our sites on destruction of our resources and our middle class. If we do not have a good environment, then we no longer have life.

Can you explain the Dirty 30's. I keep hearing that it is current technology that is causing the planets destruction. If you belive that Obama is for saving the planet, why not have him stay in Washington working on this countries problems instead of flying (causes a lot of polution) all over the country and prommising to improve the economy. Same promise he made four years ago.

KK..... I thought about you over night and you need to vote your pocket book on this. Don't buy any more carbon producing products. Lets show those mean old koke punks that we can stop their drilling and fracking for oil, scalping the beautiful Appalachian Mountains for coal, etc We will just stop buying oil and gas. Why its brilliant.

Can I make one suggestion? We need to buy up all the horses we can. My ploy is kinda a reverse on selling housing short , like me and W did. We'll go long in horses cause when you get oil stopped, will have the kokes on their knees wanting to buy a horse. email me

Why is it that everyone blames Obama for bailing out the big banks? Do people's brains really only go back to 2009? Anyone who doesn't remember G.W.Bush getting on national TV in 2008 & pleading to Congress & the American people that we had no choice but to bail out the "Too big to fail" banks - I have a CD copy of it I'll be happy to loan to you - or you can simply google it, believe me it was Bush who signed the first $700 Billion dollar bail out bill (& the banks didn't even have to tell us - the people who paid for it - what they spent the money on! What a deal! That's really punishing them for screwing the entire national economy to the tune of $Trillions of dollars! You really showed those guys Georgie! And where were them thar darn guvment reggerlaters at to ensure that these things don't happen? Where was the SEC regulators? How many of Bush's foxes were guarding the hen houses for multiple years while all this went down? We don't need regulations? Really?? De-regulating the banks is what caused the second Great Depression! Repealing the Glass-Steagal Act (& similar de-regulation) is why the handful of banks that own all of this country's wealth were allowed to bundle millions of worthless sub-prime mortgages & sell this crap on Wall Street where their buddies gave them a 4 star rating & made $Trillions (yes that's with a "T") of dollars. Millions of good Americans have lost their jobs, homes, retirements, savings, while these a**holes were allowed to do it with Bush's blessing (hey, he only had a couple more months in office, what did he have to lose? - Nothing! - but Millions of good hard working Americans sure lost a lot didn't they? They might as well just stole the money out right out of their bank accounts & deposited it in the accounts of the Wall Street millionaires because that's where it all ended up at.

If the various schemes being tried and proposed to “protect the planet” were synonymous with protecting the human beings living on the planet, then their wouldn’t be any disagreement. Alas, they are not.

Karen, calm down don't get your panties all twisted up and wring your hands while making these overly emotive proclamations. The planet does not need smug liberals to 'heal it'. The unmerited pride dripping from you libs is supercilious. Man has little effect on this grandly designed planet and God does not need your help in healing it, the thought that what you do on a daily basis would have any effect whatsoever! bahahaha!

As I watched parts of the Democrat Convention, I was sick to the stomach when God and Jerusalem disappeared from the Democratic platform. Later in the week, Democrats BOO a motion to put them back into party the platform. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgQNPs...

Geez lady, do you believe everything you hear spewing out of the mouths of politicians? Or everything you read on the internet? Someone might think you're a kool-aid drinker.

There's always going to be those who believe what they want due to their own dogma, who are ultimately unreachable.

The messenger, his hoax-ish style of message, and the reason he delivered it ($$$) does cause many to be skeptical. Too bad it wasn't presented better, by someone better.

As I watched ALL of the Democrat Convention, I was sick to the stomach when I saw the endless parade of left-wing extremists lay out the party platform for them, one by one.

KK you stay in that cave too much practicing survival living. While you were gone, A September 11, 2003 New York Times article shows that President Bush proposed “the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago.” ........................ I think W tried 9 times to fix this. Don't believe me google it.

Your quote " we have set our sites on destruction of our resources" WRONG....... Those oil and gas wells are mine. You don't have to buy from me, so until you change the the constitution .......................................................NEXT

The planet will be fine. It's us that might have problems. I think that the environmentalist movement might have more success if they moved from the idea that the planet needed protecting, to more along the lines of: holy hell, if we don't limit particular pollutants we are effectively poisoning ourselves, and if we destroy our natural resources to the point that our lives and lifestyles are no longer sustainable then . . . well . . . we won't be able to sustain them.

These huge, scary scenarios, many of which revolve around a certain degree of assumptive science, may win a few converts, but I fear that they alienate just as many people as they convert, if not more. It's too bad that it's so far away, because I'd say that one of the most effective selling tools for people who despise the concept of environmental protection would be a field trip to one of the cities in China, breathing in that awesome Beijing or Shenzhen air.

And maybe, in the estimated costs to businesses and societies of development versus a degree of sustainable, the scales might tilt a little bit if we started trying to figure out who pays for all of the cancer.

"Human population is going up at a rate of about 1,000 every 7 minutes and will reach 7 billion in about 36 days."

"Then they can take another minute to find my son Chris' Facebook page and click 'like' on it for originating his PLANET DOCTORS Facebook page."

Of course, the right-wing extremists will note that your having at least one child has contributed to the population explosion. I've seen these extremists attack Al Gore, who has four children, and Ted Turner, who has five, as being hypocrites when they talk about population control. They d this to deflect from the facts.

"As President Clinton stated at the Democratic Convention, this mess is far too big for just four years."

Of course, the right-wing extremists will point out that Obama in 2009 said, "if I don’t have this done in three years, then there’s going to be a one-term proposition.” It's unreasonable for the extremists to hold Obama to his word.

"We must let President Obama do the things he set out to do"

You mean take our money and give it to the banks? He already did that.

"Our economey needs our help."

The economy needs three things: savings, investment and entrepreneurship. The government hinders all three--savings are eaten away by inflation, investments are punished through taxation, and entrepreneurship is hampered by protectionist regulations.

" this mess is far too big for just four years."

No, it's not. The economy was much worse during the depression of 1920-21 but it recovered much faster. Why? The government cut spending and got out of the way so that savings, investment and entrepreneurship could get the economy back on track. It does not take long.

"we may not pull out of it for another 10 years"

Sadly, this is true. And it will be entirely because of Obama and Bernanke's (who was reappointed by Obama) handling of the economy.

"we have set our sites on destruction of our resources"

What is the best way to allocate scarce resources? Private ownership and control. No economist, mainstream or otherwise denies that capitalism is the most efficient method to allocate resources.

"and our middle class."

Obama is helping to destroy the middle class with his spend and spend policies that subsidize the wealthy and the poor at the expense of the middle class.

"If we do not have a good environment, then we no longer have life."

Then we should make sure the government has as little to do with it as possible.

Thanks for the excellent thinking Karen Keim. Human population is going up at a rate of about 1,000 every 7 minutes and will reach 7 billion in about 36 days. Mindless critics as above are numerous. How many PLANET DOCTORS will it take to heal our planet and to overcome environmental destruction thinking? I estimate about 3.5 billion. Fortunately we now have an organization starting in Lawrence called PLANET DOCTORS and anyone in the world can find it on Facebook and sign up to become a PLANET DOCTOR in only one minute by clicking the 'like' button on the Facebook page. Then they can take another minute to find my son Chris' Facebook page and click 'like' on it for originating his PLANET DOCTORS Facebook page. Then please also go to this internet link to see the current estimated world population. http://galen.metapath.org/popclk.html
