Protect the planet

To the editor:

As I watched parts of the Republican Convention, I was sick to the stomach when I heard Mitt Romney ridicule and scorn President Obama for “wanting to heal the planet.” Our environment is our most precious resource. If you are a religious person or claim to know God, then you know we are bound to God by nature and bound to God by grace.

At this time we should receive no grace from God for what we are doing to our planet. We mindlessly cut rainforests, we drill and frack for oil, we scalp the beautiful Appalachian Mountains for coal. Our resources are here for us now, but what about our future? In my opinion we have only one clear choice for our planet.

We must let President Obama do the things he set out to do. Our economey needs our help. G.W. left him the biggest mess of the century. As President Clinton stated at the Democratic Convention, this mess is far too big for just four years. And we may not pull out of it for another 10 years, but we have to cooperate, that means YOU, Republicans, and do what President Obama has set out to do. By continuing the tea party attitude, we have set our sites on destruction of our resources and our middle class. If we do not have a good environment, then we no longer have life.

"but we have to cooperate, that means YOU"

No.

Liberty275 2 years, 3 months ago

And you will do what about it, exactly? Will you make me cooperate, markoo?

Lol...Romney is a true leader. Good one, and thanks. I needed that laugh today.

A leader does not show such fear of the repercussions of their professed beliefs.

You know they are surveying the mudhole so they can bulldoze it. I think you should go stand at Haskell and 31st with a protest sign.

The planet will be fine. It's us that might have problems. I think that the environmentalist movement might have more success if they moved from the idea that the planet needed protecting, to more along the lines of: holy hell, if we don't limit particular pollutants we are effectively poisoning ourselves, and if we destroy our natural resources to the point that our lives and lifestyles are no longer sustainable then . . . well . . . we won't be able to sustain them.

These huge, scary scenarios, many of which revolve around a certain degree of assumptive science, may win a few converts, but I fear that they alienate just as many people as they convert, if not more. It's too bad that it's so far away, because I'd say that one of the most effective selling tools for people who despise the concept of environmental protection would be a field trip to one of the cities in China, breathing in that awesome Beijing or Shenzhen air.

And maybe, in the estimated costs to businesses and societies of development versus a degree of sustainable, the scales might tilt a little bit if we started trying to figure out who pays for all of the cancer.

And, of course, many other animals and plant species that are being destroyed.

You're right, of course - it's discouraging that we have to draw it in crayon in big letters so that people can make the connection.

But, those who are stubbornly denying the changes we're making will continue to do that, I think, regardless of how they're portrayed.

Denial is a powerful force in human psychology.

jonas_opines 2 years, 3 months ago

There will always be a few. There's always going to be those who believe what they want due to their own dogma, who are ultimately unreachable. But I suspect that there aren't as many of them as their immense noise makes it seem like there are.

jafs 2 years, 3 months ago

I hope you're right, and that they don't have the power to stop us from implementing solutions, if we still have time.

jonas_opines 2 years, 3 months ago

Because it's 'pointless' to worry about 'every' potential scenario, no matter how 'unlikely', when they are ultimately out of our 'control', and there are 'real' things we can do.

But then, we all know by now that you have a 'problem' with your grasp on 'reality'.

Liberty275 2 years, 3 months ago

"Denial is a powerful force in human psychology."

No it isn't.

Hmmm . . . "new" user. Who's been booted recently?

I detect a bit of a Linwood accent, but not enough data to know for sure.

jafs 2 years, 3 months ago

Agreed.

But let's not dismiss the message because we don't like the messenger.

parrothead8 2 years, 3 months ago

Neither the words "God" nor "Jerusalem" appear in the US Constitution, so why do they need to appear on a political party platform?

Frederic Gutknecht IV 2 years, 3 months ago

So...what? All politicians who wish to easily control the populace have and will continue to spew biblical nonsense from every orifice, but the political glue/goo which they use in attempting to bond God to Gov is against the Con. You're such a shrill, silly shill.

tbaker 2 years, 3 months ago

If the various schemes being tried and proposed to “protect the planet” were synonymous with protecting the human beings living on the planet, then their wouldn’t be any disagreement. Alas, they are not.

jafs 2 years, 3 months ago

If we destroy the environment, we destroy that which is supporting and preserving human life.

tbaker 2 years, 3 months ago

If we “protect” the environment with ideas that hurt the humans, we do the same thing.

You're all homocentric up in this house which is not ours. It is our only house but not only our house, though generally considered our toilet of demise...yet...not extinction. Do what you will and expect retribution by the forces of a natural resentment.

Oh, do let us huddle in mud huts this winter. It will be such jolly fun.

Why is it that everyone blames Obama for bailing out the big banks? Do people's brains really only go back to 2009? Anyone who doesn't remember G.W.Bush getting on national TV in 2008 & pleading to Congress & the American people that we had no choice but to bail out the "Too big to fail" banks - I have a CD copy of it I'll be happy to loan to you - or you can simply google it, believe me it was Bush who signed the first $700 Billion dollar bail out bill (& the banks didn't even have to tell us - the people who paid for it - what they spent the money on! What a deal! That's really punishing them for screwing the entire national economy to the tune of $Trillions of dollars! You really showed those guys Georgie! And where were them thar darn guvment reggerlaters at to ensure that these things don't happen? Where was the SEC regulators? How many of Bush's foxes were guarding the hen houses for multiple years while all this went down? We don't need regulations? Really?? De-regulating the banks is what caused the second Great Depression! Repealing the Glass-Steagal Act (& similar de-regulation) is why the handful of banks that own all of this country's wealth were allowed to bundle millions of worthless sub-prime mortgages & sell this crap on Wall Street where their buddies gave them a 4 star rating & made $Trillions (yes that's with a "T") of dollars. Millions of good Americans have lost their jobs, homes, retirements, savings, while these a**holes were allowed to do it with Bush's blessing (hey, he only had a couple more months in office, what did he have to lose? - Nothing! - but Millions of good hard working Americans sure lost a lot didn't they? They might as well just stole the money out right out of their bank accounts & deposited it in the accounts of the Wall Street millionaires because that's where it all ended up at.

(breathlessly stammer like it still matters) Blame Bush!! Blame Bush!!

Yawn.....

Frederic Gutknecht IV 2 years, 3 months ago

Yeah... We get it. You can't speak English but you expect to be heard. You're a yeller in the holler of overpopulated ignorance.

Frederic Gutknecht IV 2 years, 3 months ago

I want as many as you got, for less than you paid!~)

Can you explain the Dirty 30's. I keep hearing that it is current technology that is causing the planets destruction. If you belive that Obama is for saving the planet, why not have him stay in Washington working on this countries problems instead of flying (causes a lot of polution) all over the country and prommising to improve the economy. Same promise he made four years ago.

Frederic Gutknecht IV 2 years, 3 months ago

Overpopulation and "wealth" are causing the planet's destruction. Technology is the love child of sex and drugs. Live long and prosper.
