Dead battery thwarts would-be truck thieves in Lawrence

Some potential vehicle thieves were thwarted in an early-morning theft attempt Friday.

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Trent McKinley, a woman who lives in the 1300 block of West 24th Street woke Friday morning to see three men attempting to steal her 1997 Chevy pickup.

The problem? The truck’s battery was dead, and was set to be replaced Friday, McKinley said.

After being unable to start the truck, the suspects fled. The suspects, however, did cause about $800 worth of damage to the truck’s steering column.

McKinley said the suspects were described as three men who fled in a silver passenger car with a dent on the driver’s side bumper.
