“Repent” is such a simple word but seems to be losing its meaning in our more sophisticated and fast-paced world. However, it was the first word out of John the Baptist’s (Matthew 3:2) and Jesus’ (Matthew 4:17) mouths when they began their ministries. The next words were, “for the Kingdom of God is at hand.”

Repent suggests an individual decision, not a group cause or political platform. It can reflect the attitude of a nation, but only if done collectively. Why is this so important? Because individuals and nations are accountable to God, and we are either on His side or we are not. Granted, the results of this decision can be questioned but not in the heart and mind of those who make the decision. The Kingdom of God can be just as questionable, but its reality is just as profound to those who live by the Kingdom mandates given by King Jesus in His Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7).

For those who chose not to repent, the results are eternal and disastrous. Jesus says in Luke 13:1-5, when He heard about those killed by Pilate or when the Tower of Siloam collapsed, that we will likewise perish if we don’t repent. The upcoming election is an important time in our nation, but it is absolutely nothing compared to a change in a person’s or a nation’s heart. Let’s put our trust in the King of kings because His Kingdom will never end (Luke 1:33). We have no guarantee for the USA.
