Olathe Lawrence High’s Grace Morgan won an individual regional championship and, along with the Free State boys cross country team and three other city athletes, qualified for the state meet at a Class 6A regional on Saturday at Lone Elm Park.
Morgan, who ran a time of 15:14, qualified along with teammate Claire Sanner (sixth place, 15:39). The LHS girls team finished 15 points away from the qualifying third-place spot and ended up in fourth place with 85 points.
The Firebirds boys finished third and were led by a pair of runners who finished a little over a tenth of a second apart — Ryan Liston (eighth, 16:51.70) and Trail Spears (ninth, 16:51.85).
The top three teams in the boys race were separated by just six points, as the Firebirds (78 points) finished behind Olathe North (75 points) and regional champion Olathe East (72 points).
Gavin Fischer (second, 16:14) was the lone qualifier for the Lions boys, who finished last in the team standings at eighth place.
Bailey Sullivan (ninth, 15:56) also qualified individually and will be the only representative for the Firebirds girls team, which finished in fifth place with 131 points.
The qualifiers will take to the trails for the state meet Saturday at Rim Rock Farm. Class 6A boys will race at 11 a.m., followed by 6A girls at 12:30 p.m.
