Prairie Village ? Free State High’s Alexis Czapinski went 2-1 on the first day of the Class 6A state tournament and remains in the hunt for a finish as high as fifth place.

Czapinski beat Lauren O’Brien of Blue Valley North, 6-1, 6-1 and Maize’s Olivia Medaris, 6-2, 6-3, before falling to Shawnee Mission West’s Katherine Cao, 6-0, 6-2.

“Alexis played amazing today,” FSHS coach Oather Strawderman said. “She was focused in every one of her matches. She is a strong contender to finish fifth.”

The tournament will conclude today, weather permitting. If the weather is foul, it will be pushed back to Sunday.
