From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 12, 1912:

• “The third season of Woodland park has closed and the popular amusement resort is now closed for the winter, after a fairly successful season, more successful than any that has preceded it and Lawrence is assured of the fact that the park will again be opened next spring…. The patronage was ahead of last year, but still it was not up to the expectations. However, Lawrence people are beginning to appreciate more and more the work that is being done at the park for the purpose of furnishing pleasant recreation for the city and it would be a great loss to the city if the amusement company should decide to abandon the proposition…. During the season a Chautauqua was held at the park at which a number of noted speakers including William Jennings Bryan and Dr. Frederick Cook and a number of others addressed the audiences. Woodland Park was converted into a military camp for a week during the season and the soldiers furnished a splendid attraction. Two big circuses were held at the park. Picnics were common occurrences among the big ones being the Fourth of July, Labor Day and Merchants Picnics. The annual Douglas County Fair held at the park was another of the big attractions…. Baseball games were a regular attraction on the Woodland Diamond and there were some good exhibitions staged for the benefit of the Lawrence fans. Next year there will be more…. Baseball of some kind is a sure thing…. The Sunday night band concerts that proved to be so popular this year will be resumed again next spring.”
