The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has identified a Lawrence man who died in a single-vehicle crash Wednesday evening as Charles L. Read, 56.

Read was killed when his 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee left the road and ran head-on into a tree near the intersection of County Road 1061 and North 900 Road, south of Eudora.

Read was dead when emergency crews arrived and was the only occupant in the vehicle. A sheriff's office spokesman said it's not clear if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

My condolences to the family and friends too. RIP...

It is so strange that I go to Gardner typically once a year. (This year a few more times.) Normally, part of my route is to go from Douglas County Rd 1061 (2200 Rd) south to 151st or 159th street and then turn east (left). However, for some reason this time, the computer directions stated to turn east (left) at 900th Rd. I wasn't paying close enough attention, and missed it and had to turn around. There is just a single farm at that intersection of 2200 Rd & 900 Rd (on the north east corner). Normally, I wouldn't commit a spot to memory, but given that I goofed up and had to turn around made it stick out in my mind. I was there at 2:30 pm Wednesday, and it is sad to think that a few hours later someone died at that very area eight hours later. I also feel sorry for the farmstead family who most likely came up on this accident.

Charlie was a great guy and I still can't wrap my head around this. You were taken much way too soon, my friend. Sincere condolences and prayers to the Read family. RIP
