Letter: Accountability

To the editor:

Since we’re considering post-tenure review, I suggest we go one step further and have post-retirement reviews. I’ll be the first to admit I have not published a single article, not to mention a book, on French literature or on the latest approach to grammar in linguistics. Perhaps I can earn some points for having been a caregiver for some years, a volunteer teacher of French and Latin at St. John’s School and a reader for Audio-Reader, but probably not; such activities simply don’t count as much as published “scholarship,” do they? Frankly, I have little hope that the latest attempt at “accountability” will be handled any better than previous ones on which I wasted my time in 39 years at Kansas University — not until effective teaching is given the weight that it deserves.
