KUMC candidates

November 3, 2012

To the editor:

I chair the committee undertaking the search for a new executive vice chancellor of the Kansas University Medical Center. Contrary to repeated claims in Lawrence Journal-World opinion pieces, at no point did our committee forward to Chancellor Gray-Little only one candidate. The committee was unanimous in its desire to identify both strong internal and external candidates. The chancellor has provided the search committee with complete autonomy in the conduct of this search, and the committee is pleased with the quality of the candidates that will be visiting the medical center this month.

Editor’s note: The fact is the first recommendation of the search committee, whether one, two or more individuals, for one reason or another, was rejected by the chancellor.

Note to Regents: Kansas needs a dental school and a second medical school that will emphasize family practice and not research and specialization.

Shorter Dolph: The Med Center is not being run the way I want it run. He's just trying to find an outlet for his boundless enthusiasm, now that's he's run the family enterprise into a wall.

I have never seen this before. The editor responding to a Letter to the Editor. Not very professional, if you ask me.

From first hand information, the editors footnote is so far off base as to be comical. Professor Ellerbeck is right on base.

The "editor's note" here is absolutely pathetic, and totally unethical. This paper has really become a partisan rag.

Commenter's note: Considering that the chair of the search committee has just refuted your claim, the readers of this newspaper deserve to know on what basis you continue to state this falsehood. "Because I say so" is not reporting, it is rumor mongering.
