Wednesday’s drill near KU’s Corbin Hall will include plenty of sirens

You might hear plenty of sirens Wednesday morning and see a flurry of activity near Corbin Hall on the Kansas University campus.

It’s only a drill as members of the KU Public Safety Office and dozens of other personnel from area law enforcement and fire and medical agencies conduct an annual emergency response exercise.

Gavin Young, a KU spokesman, said the 10 a.m. event will involve a crisis scenario at Corbin Hall, and it will allow area agencies to assess and improve their overall readiness for responding to an emergency by testing emergency plans and procedures to reveal potential strengths and weaknesses.

“It’s the debriefing afterwards where you learn the lesson,” Young said.

Some areas around Corbin may be blocked off during the four-hour exercise, including the 1000 block of Ohio Street.

Other agencies participating include the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Lawrence Police Department, Eudora Police Department, Baldwin City Police Department, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical and the KU Office of Public Affairs.
