Lawrence police said Friday that they were continuing the search for Yelekal Alemu, a 23-year-old former Kansas University student last seen Saturday morning, and that no new evidence as to his whereabouts had been found.

The body of 23-year-old Lawrence man Yelekal Alemu, known as Kal, was discovered east of Lawrence on May 31, 2012. Alemu, a former Kansas University student, was reported missing about three weeks earlier. No foul play is suspected in his death.

Friends and family reported Alemu, who goes by the name Kal, missing Saturday after he failed to show up for a family gathering. His car was found Saturday evening on private property in rural Douglas County, southwest of Lawrence. It was not damaged.

Zachary Luea, an attorney assisting Alemu’s family, said Thursday that Douglas County Sheriffs officers had found the car by tracking Alemu’s cellphone, but that the cellphone was not found in the car and has not been active since Saturday. Law enforcement officials searched the area around the car Sunday and Monday through Wednesday with the help of canine units from the Kansas Highway Patrol. Additionally, they searched Tuesday and Wednesday with a helicopter unit. The area is heavily wooded, Luea said, and no officers found any evidence of Alemu.

Since Wednesday, Lawrence police have continued interviewing and investigating, including searching Alemu’s computer, which was found earlier in the week. Luea said the family wished to thank the agencies that have helped in the search and continue to post fliers in Lawrence, asking anyone with information to come forward.

“Their main concern is getting Kal home,” he said of the family.
