Free State softball drops regional title game

The Free State High softball team’s season ended Wednesday night at Topeka-Washburn Rural with a 16-3 loss to WRHS in a regional championship game.

Though the Firebirds scored two runs in the top of the second on a Courtney Parker double, the Blues plated nine runs in the bottom of the first to take control, and eventually won in five innings.

Free State (13-8) advanced to the regional final with a 9-6 victory over Manhattan in the afternoon.

Meredith Morris and Whitney Rothwell both contributed home runs for Free State.

The Firebirds pulled away late with a four-run fifth inning that was aided by two Manhattan errors.
