A Douglas County judge Thursday ordered a 23-year-old Franklin County man to serve a five-year and six-month prison sentence for his role in two Lawrence robberies.

District Judge Paula Martin gave Mikael D. Englund, of Richmond, credit for the one year he’s already served in jail awaiting a trial and sentencing, and he also would be eligible for a 15 percent reduction in his 66-month sentence for good behavior in prison.

A jury in April convicted Englund of two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of aggravated burglary. Prosecutors accused him of participating in a January 2011 armed robbery of a Lawrence man of marijuana, money and electronics at the victim’s apartment in the 800 block of Hilltop Drive. Englund was also accused of a March 2011 robbery of the same victim at the same apartment. Englund confessed his involvement in a statement to Lawrence police.

Two other Franklin County men, Trenton Rowsey, 20, and Dustin A. Smith, 24, have been convicted for their involvement in one robbery each. A juvenile boy was also convicted for his involvement in the March 2011 robbery when the victim was struck in the head.

“(Englund) was the common denominator in two very distinct robberies,” said James McCabria, an assistant Douglas County district attorney.

Englund said in court Thursday he had issues with drugs and alcohol at the time of the robberies.

“I’m not trying to say that’s the cause of everything, but it didn’t help at all,” he said. “I made some very bad decisions. I’m sorry for what I have done.”

Martin ordered Englund to serve 66 months, 59 months and 32 months in prison, but she ruled he could serve the three sentences concurrently. He will also be required to register as a violent offender when he is released from prison because a firearm was used in the first robbery.
