To the editor:

Last Friday’s mediocre jobs report was greeted with barely concealed glee by presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

Romney opined that any unemployment rate above 4 percent is “not cause for celebration” and that the economy should be adding 500,000 new jobs per month.

I presume that Mr. Romney was not celebrating at any time during the Reagan, Bush the Elder, or Bush the Younger administrations, since there was not a single year on the watch of those Republican presidents when the annual rate of unemployment averaged 4 percent or below. Further, the “job creation” record during the most recent Republican administration (George W. Bush) averaged essentially ZERO new jobs per month.

So, why exactly should these Republican stumblebums be entrusted again with the nation’s economic well-being? Their discredited policies seem more likely to lead us into still another recession than to an accelerated recovery. And, by the way, the last president to preside over a 4 percent unemployment economy was Bill Clinton!
