• Lawrence Memorial Hospital has named Joseph Pedley as its new chief financial officer. He will oversee financial operations at the hospital. Pedley has worked in health care financial management for 20 years. Most recently, he served as CFO at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango, Colo. He also worked for Catholic Health Initiatives, a nonprofit health system with more than 70 hospitals in 22 states. Pedley graduated from the University of Nebraska with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Pedley replaces Simon Scholtz, who retired and served as LMH’s CFO for 13 years.

• Sunflower Publishing won 2012 Great Plains Journalism Awards last weekend. Topeka Magazine chief photographer Jason Dailey won first place in the magazine portrait category. Dailey’s winning portrait, a profile of Brigadier Gen. Deborah Rose, appeared in the summer 2011 edition of Topeka Magazine. Lawrence Magazine art director Shelly Bryant and the staff of Lawrence Magazine placed in the finalist category of Best Magazine Page Design. Lawrence Magazine’s entry was for the article “What Would John Brown Do?” written by Amber Fraley and appearing in the publication’s fall 2011 edition. Other contributors to the story included Dailey, Bill Stephens (photography), Jennifer Heeke (photography) and Jason Barr (artwork). The Great Plains Journalism Awards are sponsored by the Tulsa Press Club and Benevolent Association. Competition is open to publications of all sizes in an eight-state region of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota.

• Julian Rios and Kelly Livingston, both of Lawrence, passed the certified public accountant examination. Lawrence Davidson, Tonganoxie, also passed the test, according to the Kansas Board of Accountancy.

• Daniel Heptig has accepted a position as a housing and consumer credit counselor working at the Lawrence and Topeka Housing and Credit Counseling Inc. offices. Heptig recently served as an escrow closing officer with First American Title Insurance Co. in Lawrence.
