FSHS baseball falls, 3-2

? Free State pitchers Ryan Cantrell and Sam Hearnen combined to allow just six hits, but the Firebirds fell to Shawnee Mission East, 3-2 in nine innings, in high school baseball Thursday night.

Cantrell started and went three innings, and Hearnen (4-2) pitched until SM East won it with one out in the ninth.

“Those two were outstanding on the mound,” FSHS coach Mike Hill said.

Anthony Miele drove in one of Free State’s runs with a single, and Cameron Pope drove in the other with an infield out.

Firebirds center field Joe Dineen threw out a runner at the plate in the bottom of the eighth to keep the game tied.

“They won’t overwhelm you with talent, but goodness gracious, they will fight,” Hill said of the Firebirds. “We’re growing up. I’m just really proud of the way they battled.”

Free State (8-10) will play at Lawrence High at 5:15 p.m. Monday.
