Ex-KU basketball player Marcus Morris enters diversion agreement for battery charge

Former Kansas University and current NBA basketball player Marcus Morris has entered into a diversion agreement with prosecutors related to a February incident at a Lawrence nightclub.

Morris, 22, currently a Houston Rockets player, received a misdemeanor battery citation in Lawrence Municipal Court. Police said early on Feb. 26 a male employee of The Cave, 1200 Oread Ave., alleged he was punched by a man after a verbal dispute turned physical. It was also alleged that another man punched the employee from behind, police said at the time.

Morris and Julius K. Harris, 23, of Philadelphia, were both given notices to appear in municipal court.

Lawrence City Prosecutor Jerry Little said Friday that Morris had filed a diversion agreement and waived his right to a trial. Morris agreed to pay a diversion fee of $300 and $60 in court costs. He also agreed to have no contact with the victim and to not return to The Cave. Little said the diversion term runs for 12 months, meaning the case eventually will be dismissed if Morris fulfills those terms and stays out of further legal trouble during that time.

Little said prosecutors did notify the victim in the case that Morris applied for diversion, but they did not hear back from him.

Harris also has submitted a diversion application, but it has not yet been processed, Little said.
