Gas mystery

To the editor:

The editorial column Friday was titled “Gasoline prices are a mystery.” That is certainly true in Lawrence. As a retired person, I try to be very alert to the price of gas. On the other hand, I volunteer in both Topeka and Kansas City once a week. Gas is usually significantly cheaper in both of the big towns on either side of us than it is in Lawrence! Therefore I usually fill up in those cities.

Many Lawrence residents commute to both Kansas City and Topeka. Surely they also take advantage of this price differential, and Lawrence stations are losing much business to the “big cities” on either side of us. Why can’t local suppliers bring their prices in line and sell a greater volume of gas locally? Perhaps the Journal-World could do some “investigative journalism” about this!
