To the editor:

It feels awfully good to be a Jayhawk today, not just because of the thrilling victory over North Carolina and the great showing by the women’s basketball team, but because Jayhawk Nation celebrated the right way.

I spent an hour with the masses downtown following Sunday’s victory. I witnessed thousands of people singing and screaming, spreading high-fives, dancing and completely clogging Mass Street. What I didn’t see was any violence, fires, vandalism or any of the other forms of hooliganism that plagues celebrations in so many other places. I was proud to be a Jayhawk during the game, but even prouder after.

Kudos, too, to our local law enforcement officials and officers for showing tremendous restraint. The dozens of officers lining Mass Street had to be nervous watching the throngs pour in. If they were, they didn’t show it. Instead, they were all smiles, joining in the high-fives. Know that the job you did Sunday was deeply appreciated.

Rock Chalk!
