City defers issue of tennis court lighting

A plan to light eight public tennis courts near Lawrence High School won’t get a hearing at today’s Lawrence City Commission meeting after all.

The city manager’s office announced late Monday afternoon that the tennis court lighting issue had been “indefinitely deferred” from today’s commission meeting.

City Manager David Corliss said Mayor Aron Cromwell and City Commissioner Bob Schumm both had asked the staff to research other options for providing lighted tennis courts.

Several neighbors near Lawrence High have expressed concern that adding lights to the eight courts would negatively affect nearby residential properties.

“We just need more time to research what other options may be out there,” Corliss said. “Hopefully, we’ll get it back on an agenda soon.”
