A 29-year-old Eudora woman, who was arrested in connection with a string of Eudora burglaries last summer, pleaded no contest Friday morning to child endangerment and theft, both misdemeanors.

David Melton, a chief assistant district attorney, said prosecutors had evidence Leah D. Thomas was living at a home in the 500 block of East 10th Street last June when Eudora police officers discovered several stolen items, including tools.

Two co-defendants, David A. Thomas, 29, and Joseph L. Klebenstein, 19, have entered pleas in connection with the burglaries and both received probation.

Melton said a reserve Eudora police officer was one of the victims and after learning the items might have been at the residence negotiated a price to buy tools from David Thomas. The officer then later alerted authorities who searched the property and recovered stolen items from seven victims.

Melton said officers also discovered an exposed electrical wire to an air conditioner and a 5-year-old child was in the residence.

“If touched, it would have resulted in electrocution,” Melton said.

Defense attorney Kenzie Singleton said in court Leah Thomas had attempted to protect the children as best she could and that she had not left the residence due to threats of domestic violence if she did.

“She truly felt that leaving there was more dangerous than staying there,” said Singleton, adding that Leah Thomas is expected to regain custody of her children soon.

District Judge Kay Huff ordered Thomas to serve probation and pay $820 restitution in the case.
