Atchison man gets 15 days in jail for injuring Lawrence man

A 22-year-old Atchison man was sentenced to serve 15 days in jail for a June incident in which a Lawrence man was injured.

District Judge Kay Huff on Thursday afternoon also ordered Joshua W. Downing to serve one year on probation after he pleaded no contest March 5 to attempted aggravated battery. Prosecutors accused Downing of swinging at the Lawrence man intending to strike him in the face during a 2:30 a.m. confrontation on June 30 in the 500 block of West 19th Street.

David Melton, a chief assistant district attorney, said Downing was a passenger in a car that was driving by a group of people walking in the area. Downing confronted the group of people because he believed they had disrespected him.

The Lawrence man suffered a head injury and was bleeding, and Downing has paid restitution in the case, Melton said. Huff has allowed Downing, who attends a college in Kentucky, to serve 15 days in jail beginning June 1.
