Birth control

To the editor:

I’ve been reading about the current birth control controversy and Mr. Brownback’s rhetoric and must admit I’m totally confused! Who exactly is religiously opposed to birth control? I was raised a Catholic and every Catholic I knew practiced birth control!

I read that one in five children in this country live below the poverty line, and over a half million are waiting to be adopted. I can understand some people are religiously opposed to abortion, but why birth control? It’s a contradiction to oppose both. It’s only logical that, if birth control is practiced, there would be no need for an abortion.

By opposing birth control you send out either of two messages. One is the old “be fruitful and multiply” message and bring as many children and more mouths to feed in to this world as possible. The other message would be to make sex strictly for reproducing more offspring. I am morally and religiously opposed to both messages, especially the latter.

It seems as though the same people who want to bring as many children into this world as possible don’t want to assume the moral responsibilities of caring for these children. Just look at all those who complain about paying taxes and paying for welfare and support all the cuts being made for social services. Logic and compassion seem to be in short supply these days.
