Thirty years later, the Watkins Community Museum of History is celebrating “The Day After.”

The museum invites those who took part in the making of the made-for-TV movie “The Day After” to attend a cast and crew 30th anniversary reunion from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the museum.

Attendees will have the opportunity to record their memories from the filming at a listening booth operated by Kansas Public Radio.

The event is being held in conjunction with the new exhibit “The Day After: Living in Fear?” that examines the film’s impact on the community and the world. Filmed on location in Lawrence and surrounding areas in 1982, the movie responded to prevailing fears of the threat of nuclear war by examining its potential aftermath. The exhibit will be open during the event.

A screening of the movie will take place at the Spencer Museum of Art at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Both events are free and open to the public. The Lied Center is also offering reunion attendees a chance to win a pair of tickets to see actor John Lithgow’s one-man show, “Stories by Heart,” on Oct. 20. Lithgow was one of the stars of “The Day After.”
