Lions stand out at track meet

Three Lawrence High track products did their best to represent their home state earlier this month at The Meet of Champions, an event for graduated high school seniors from Kansas and Missouri.

Lions Steven Hill, Blake Hocking and Gari Jones each finished in the top two in their events June 6 at Belton, Mo.

Hill won both the long jump (21 feet, 9 inches) and the triple jump (44-4.75) at the meet. Both of his jumps won by at least one foot.

Hocking had gold-medal throws in both shot put (54-0) and discus (156-2). His winning discus throw traveled nearly 20 feet farther than the second-place throw by Missouri’s Brandon Chapman (137-1).

Jones, the top LHS sprinter this season, took second place in both the 100-meter dash (11.09) and the 200 (22.51). Platte County (Mo.) twins Naron and Jaron Rollins barely beat out Jones in the two races. Naron won the 100 by two-tenths of a second and Jaron finished 0.33 seconds ahead of Jones in the 200.
