Fire calls keep crews busy on Saturday

A fire on Saturday afternoon at 319 Northwood Lane left a duplex uninhabitable and the building’s garage damaged

A man and child occupied one side of the duplex, but both were able to escape the building on their own. The other side of the duplex was unoccupied, and there were no injuries.

The cause and damage estimate from the fire is still under investigation, said Doug Green, Division Chief for Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical.

Green said the Red Cross was called and will assist the occupants of the duplex because of the damage caused to their home.

The duplex on Northwood was just a few blocks from the site of an earlier structure fire on Saturday.

The fire at a home at 1300 W. Second Terrace started in the morning. The cause is still under investigation, but a 6-by-8-foot exterior shed caught fire and the fire traveled to the adjacent home. There was no estimate Saturday night on the cause or damage, Green said.

Also Saturday, multiple emergency units responded around 2:45 p.m. to a grass fire near Lecompton on U.S. Highway 40. Workers were able to control the fire within half an hour and no one was injured.
