From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 20, 1912:

• “Further evidence that Lawrence is becoming a modern city, will be noticed tomorrow when the first taxicabs will begin operation here. A company to be known as the Lawrence Taxicab company has been organized in Lawrence and will conduct a regular taxi service in Lawrence. Frank R. Dodds will be the manager of the company. The first cars will be brought up from Kansas City tomorrow, two in number, and will be put into service at once.”
• “The war is on. Marshal Meyers has called together his trusty warriors and the campaign against weeds in the city of Lawrence is on in earnest. The weeds are not bad but the police department doesn’t intend that they shall get that way. Every day calls are being answered and delinquent property owners notified of their duty toward the city in the matter of cutting weeds. The late hot weather and moisture has caused the weeds to take on quite a growth all over town, principally in the outlying streets and alleys and on the vacant lots of the city. These weeds must be cleaned up at once by the property owners, or some of them may be brought into police court and made to explain why they did not do so. An unsatisfactory explanation will be followed by a fine.”
• “The old Taft Club is stirring about again and will take care of the President’s campaign in Douglas county. No meeting of the club has been called as yet, but the leaders are active in the matter and are preparing to issue a call in the near future. The old club will probably be revived just as it was with the same officers as before.”
• “Want to be a Soldier? Company H, K.N.G., is still a few short of the number of men that the company is permitted to contain and anyone desiring to be a soldier can enlist now and get in in time for the August maneuver.”
