Six city track athletes all-league

Recognizing the high school athletes who achieved the most success during league, regional and state championships this spring, the Sunflower League’s coaches recently revealed the 2012 all-league track team.

Six city athletes received first-team honors, with Lawrence High’s Steven Hill and Blake Hocking leading the way. The top athletes in two events apiece, Hocking was rewarded for his shot put and discus throws, while Hill was recognized in both the long jump and triple jump.

For Free State, Kain Anderson (1,600 meters), DayShawn Berndt (200), Khadijah Lane (400) and Scout Wiebe (javelin) made the first team.

The Firebirds’ Alexa Harmon-Thomas was recognized on the league’s second team for her performances in the long jump, high jump and 300 hurdles. Anderson (800 and 3,200) and Berndt (400) also picked up second-team honors for FSHS. Lawrence’s Matia Finley was named to the second team for discus.

A slew of city athletes received honorable mention from the league.

Free State: boys 4×100 relay, Adam Joice, Tyler Odell, Seth Maples and Berndt; boys 4×400 relay, Kyle Freese, Stan Skwarlo, Anderson and Berndt; Kiara Clark, 300 hurdles; Brie Mingus, shot put; Lynn Robinson, 1,600; Bailey Sullivan, 1,600; girls 4×400 relay, Courtney Huffman, Sullivan, Lane and Robinson.
